Bathroom Vanities – Making them safe for toddlers
Bathroom vanities can make a bathroom absolutely gorgeous. However, they may pose a safety problem to those that have small children running around their home. Since we realize that toddlers could easily injure themselves while in the bathroom, we have put together an article giving some tips on how one can make their bathroom vanity safe. Given that most bathroom vanities aren’t equipped to handle children straight out of the box, we’d advise any concerned parents to follow along as we look into how one can maximize the safety of their bathroom vanity.
Bathroom vanities are essentially pieces of furniture located in our bathrooms. They dual as storage pieces. Since bathroom vanities share many of the same features as furniture (sharp corners, hard surfaces, etc.) they can be real dangerous when utilized by toddlers or young children. Fortunately, one can take some simple steps to make their bathroom vanity far more suitable for children. While one might guess that such improvements would be costly, it turns out that they are rather inexpensive. So, without further ado, here we go.
The first thing a vanity owner needs to do is address the sharp corners which bathroom vanities have in plentiful quantities. These corners need to be cushioned with some material so they are safe in the event that a child (or adult) falls along the corner with great impact. There are a variety of products that are suitable for making the corners increasingly safe. We recommend using a small strip of foam tape along the corners of your vanity to cover the harsh corners. Foam tape is available in both single and double sided versions. Make sure you get the single sided form of the tape, as you only want to attach one side of it to your vanity. All bathroom vanities have a specific look they need to maintain, and thus we recommend getting a very narrow version of the single sided tape as to not retract from the look of the vanity. Again, it is up to you to decide how thick of a tape to use.
The doors on bathroom vanities are the next item on our agenda. Most of us store some potentially toxic styling products in our vanities. If these products fall into the wrong hands, that could spell complete disaster - especially if they fall within the hands of a child. Thus, we need to secure these doors from children. To achieve such a feat, we will be using cabinet latches. Cabinet latches allow us to secure cabinets from unwanted intruders while still making them conveniently accessible to those who they are intended for. Cabinet latches are extremely simple to install and can be had very inexpensively. You will find that they are widely available in home improvement stores, as well as online. If your vanity features drawers, as most bathroom vanities do, it would be a good idea to install these latches on them as well.
Finally, you want to make sure that the top of your bathroom vanity is not cluttered with items readily able to fall and injure someone. If you have objects such as hair dryers or styling irons on your vanity, you want to put them away in a safe location. Objects such as these can be harmful if accidentally tipped over. You also want to make sure that soap dishes and tooth brush holders are as near the wall as possible. You want to place these objects out of the reach of younger family members.
You bathroom vanity should now be child-safe! We applaud the efforts you’ve taken to make your bathroom vanity as safe as possible and hope you encounter no further problems with it in regards to safety. It is our hope that this article has proved to you that bathroom vanities can be both stylish and child-friendly.
